Custom Printing FAQ
When submitting files for print please submit them as: - A flattened PDF, TIFF, or JPEG file - 300 DPI (or PPI) resolution (images taken on your phone will not work) - Sized with a .125" bleed (does not apply to enamel pins or patches) - No crop marks
What are your accepted file formats for printing? We prefer flattened PDF, TIFF, or JPEG files unless otherwise specified. Layered files tend to lose elements when re-opened by other programs. For instance, we may not have a particular font you used for a design. If you didn’t flatten your file, our programs will replace this font with a standard font, and we’d never know! We are not responsible for inaccuracies due to files submitted incorrectly. Please refrain from sending screenshots or photos taken on a cell phone. Scans or digital files are best!
What does DPI or PPI mean? What color mode should I send files in? DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. PPI is another term that means the same thing, Pixels Per Inch. In short, we need files that are designed with a resolution (DPI/PPI) of 300 at minimum. If your file says 72, that’s too low-res for printing (but it’s great for web). Your files MUST be designed at this resolution spec, it’s not something that can be changed after the fact. This ensures your printing comes out nice and crisp! Please design your files in CMYK mode as well.
What is bleed? “Bleed” refers to that little extra space needed all around an image to account for cutting, so your final size is exact and nothing important is cut off. Size your artwork .125” over your final trim size to be safe. For instance, if you’re ordering a 4x6 postcard, please submit your file at 4.125 x 6.125. Please don’t include crop marks in your design! We don’t need ‘em. Our prepress department does check all files before printing to ensure that everything looks correct. If something looks off, we will be in touch!
Do you color-match? Enamel pins, roll labels, and tissue paper can all be Pantone-matched. This service is included in the enamel pin pricing, but an additional fee is required for Pantone-matching on roll labels and screen printed items. We do not guarantee color-matching on digitally-printed items. With digital printing (business cards, postcards, brochures, etc), colors can vary slightly between runs and reorders. Tower Press guarantees that its prints will meet CMYK industry standards. We cannot guarantee “match-print” color fidelity and cannot prevent slight color shifts throughout an order.
Because we cannot control the color reproduction of a customer’s computer monitor, we cannot guarantee that the actual print color will precisely match any preview/proof as it appears on your monitor. Tower Press is not responsible for for any color shift in converted photographs (RGB images) with black, near grey, or grey tones. Please note that the application of UV coating may have an effect upon or change the appearance of printed colors. Tower Press is not responsible for the color appearance of a UV coated product.
Will I see a proof? We email a digital proof for enamel pins, keychains, patches. For any printing service, we do not offer physical proofs or press checks. If you'd like a digital proof for approval, please drop us a note with your order.
I need something printed, but don’t see it on your website! We are often able to take on custom jobs. Please use the Custom Print Request form on our website.
My file has a centered image with a border around it. That’s going to look great, right? Probably not. But maybe. We don’t recommend it though! All printed products have a 2mm printing tolerance, which means thin borders or carefully centered graphics may shift or appear uneven on the final product, up to 1/8". We’d hate for you to be disappointed, so we recommend eliminating borders altogether from your designs.
Some of my items have clamp marks, rough edges, and/or scratches - help! We typically print an overage on orders to help cancel this out. Normally during quality control, we will take out anything deemed "not satisfactory" but you may still find some in your box. We utilize an over/under policy of 10%. If you believe the majority of your order is unusable, please let us know.
Do you print the Tower Press logo or name on any of my items? Nope! We don’t include our branding on any custom printing. We want YOU to shine!
When will my item(s) ship? Each product has its own standard turn time, listed in the product description. These are listed in business days, as we don’t operate the press on the weekends or holidays.
Can I cancel my job? No, once an order is placed, we move production very quickly. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us before placing your order.
Can I come to your office and place an order or pick up an order? No, we no longer have a physical office and moved our operations to join the Work From Home movement. All orders ship directly to clients via our production houses.
Are your products made in the USA? Enamel pins, keychains, patches, custom packaging, and some promo items are manufactured in our overseas facilities. Most paper goods are produced in the US. Our HQ is based in Atlanta, GA.
I received my enamel pins and some are messed up. All enamel pins are custom made individually, and sometimes may not appear uniform. Below are acceptable and unacceptable grades based on industry standard. If you believe some of your pins fall into the "unacceptable" category, please contact us.
